This week I traveled to Texas for work. This included 2 miserable connecting flights to get to my destination. Both times I had people (men and women) sitting next to me who were “huskier” then me. The sheer wideness of their physical being meant they literally spilled over into the seats next to them …. and onto me. And to be fair it honestly was not 100% their faults. Airline seats are absolutely too small for what we generously call “normal size” people. There is no way anyone beyond a 10 year old school girl is going to feel comfortable sitting on a current airline seat.
So this week it became official. My body no longer fits in a current regular coach airline seat. While I am a larger guy there were/are far far bigger people all around me. I don’t understand how they do it. I have no idea how they cram their much bigger asses into the almost non existent seats currently available on most major airlines. It’s like a David Blain magic trick.
Maybe that is why many airlines no longer serve the traditional free snack (peanuts, crackers, etc) on all flights. They might claim budget cuts and rising costs but I think it is a secret diet program the airlines have started to make travelers smaller so they can fit in the tiny seats.
Personally I always get (demand) an aisle seat. I’ll stay over an extra day at my own expense and switch flights if I can’t get one. It’s that important to me.
The aisle seat at least allows the luxury of having no one on one side of me. On both recent flights I had no choice but to rotate my entire torso to the left and lean out into the aisle to have room for both of my arms in my assigned seat. That worked with the exception of constantly getting bumped by airline crew, the drink cart which smashed into my outside knee, and the fact that after over an hour of twisting my body unnaturally I cramped up from my neck to the tips of my toes.
What happened to the “personal space” that everyone seems to covet so highly? It is nonexistent on an airplane. For all intensive purposes you are basically (and sometimes intimately) rubbing your body against the people next to you for long periods of time. And if there is bad turbulence you might have a case for unintentional rape. I know DNA is being swapped via the contact.
I watched all of the other travelers around me on my recent flights and NO ONE looked content. If anything there was an overwhelming sense of unease from the group. Everyone was fidgeting constantly and endlessly repositioning their bodies in futile attempts to sit comfortably.
I will now start dieting 2 months in advance of any future airline travel. I figure dropping 5-10 pounds will exponentially improve my airline traveling experience and overall comfort. I just don’t see any other option.
Who else has experienced this travel hell when flying ?
About The Author: There's a lot about the world I love. And at the same time there is an equal amount of useless matter that drives me completely nuts. The only way to avoid becoming like Christian Bale in American Psycho and singing Hip To Be Square by Huey Lewis and the News all day long is to regurgitate the passion and sometimes madness that boils inside me. I am no better then you. I am no different then you. I am a Normal Guy just trying to fight my way through today and make it to tomorrow.....
Jan 19, 2015 0Summary: This watch is what I refer to as a concept watch. I use that term to describe the watch as you would use the terms dress, sport, or diver. I think it is a very exclusive category and there are not that many watches that fall into the category of concept. I’m undecided if […]
Mar 29, 2015 0Indiana is in the middle of a well deserved firestorm this week for their incredibly shitty Senate Bill 101, otherwise known as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, and otherwise known as the “Turn Away The Gays” bill. Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, who must realize he is basically...
